A hidden gem of an album

Posted on: 10 February 2010

I thought I'd break my week long lull (don't ask) with a hats-off to an album I have recently rediscovered. The album is To Lose my Life and the band is White Lies. I'm not too sure how successful this album was, as I dip in and out of the mainstream music quite erratically throughout the year. I remember when I acquired this album last year, I tipped it as a good'en, but I'm only now really discovering how good an album it is.

My highlights include: E.S.T., Unfinished Business and From The Stars, as well as the excellent singles Farewell to the Fairground and the album-titled track, To Lose my Life.

This is a consistently solid album from start to finish, with each song reading like a story. I have a bad habit of missing lyrics and heading straight for the instrumental elements (a trait I put down to playing guitar). And with White Lies you'd be a fool to not listen to the lyrics; morbid in places, but meaningful and punchy at the same time.

If you haven't heard this album, I urge you to give it a listen.
