Films watched in 2020
Death to 2020, 2020 - ★★½
A bit on-the-nose and I didn't find the humour very funny. Overly US-focussed as well. I expected a bit more imagination. Samuel L almost saved it.
First Man, 2018 - ★★★
Slow and ploddy with a typical Gosling performance. Interesting and gripping in parts but overall lacked something special.
The Midnight Sky, 2020 - ★★★½
A visually impressive and curious plot which unfolded at a slow pace. The cast is decent, but the film underwhelmed with no real substance.
The Social Dilemma, 2020 - ★★★½
A powerful and must-watch documentary, particularly for those of the "Gen-Z" generation. Scary and thought-provoking, but I thought they could've hit home even more with the drama sequences. It will certainly make me reevaluate my social habits.
Midsommar, 2019 - ★★★½
Unsettling. Very unsettling. Not least in its tranquille and jovial feel throughout. Scary isnt the word but it will stay with you. It doesn't have you consistently on edge like some horrors but when the moments come they hit hard and surreptitiously.
Parasite, 2019 - ★★★½
I was massively hyped for this; wanting to watch it for over a year. Honestly, I was a little underwhelmed. The twist was cleverly done and a real shocker, but the first half of the film was almost a slapstick which didn't really resonate. It was an enjoyable watch but won't stay with me.
Captain Fantastic, 2016 - ★★★★
A wonderful, thought-provoking, wholesome adventure. A brilliant cast of young people and capped by a heart warming display from Mortensen.
Knives Out, 2019 - ★★★★
Quirky, heart-warming murder mystery adventure. Craig is excellent. A great cast.
The Platform, 2019 - ★★★★
A very watchable dystopian sci-fi. I just wish films like this with so much premise and mystery had a little more reveal at the end. An intriguing concept and one that delivers well throughout.
13th, 2016 - ★★★★
Eye-opening and gut wrenchingly close to the bone. A very well told documentary on the heart-breakingly unfair history of racial prejudice in America.
The Thing, 2011 - ★★★
I saw the original a long time ago but I remember it was better. Nothing much to this. Mostly pretty standard horror franchise. It was fine.
2036 Origin Unknown, 2018 - ★★
An interesting premise but overall a cramped, restrictive production with very little memorable dialog. A wishy washy ending that felt incomplete.
A Quiet Place, 2018 - ★★★½
Watchable; suspenseful. A few shocks but overall a fairly predictable horror flick once the novelty wears off. Warm characters kept me watching.
Marriage Story, 2019 - ★★★★
A sobering and heartfelt account of a marriage breakup and the subsequent fallout when dealing with a child. Wonderfully told but an emotional and crushing indictment of the legalities of divorce.
Dunkirk, 2017 - ★★★★
Harrowing, wonderfully shot. The timeframes were a little jarring at first. Not really about the individual characters. A well told story though.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, 2019 - ★★★
A bit meander-y. Not as strong as the previous two; Halle Berry's character felt a bit of a token. Strong fight scenes but Keanu plays another great rendition of a wooden puppet. Watchable, though.
The Dawn Wall, 2017 - ★★★★
A great adventure documentary. Engaging and well-told. An overly well-rounded story to the point of being scripted though.
