Films watched in 2021
Death to 2021, 2021 - ★★
Somehow even worse than Death to 2020. Not funny, and in some cases disrespectfully crass. Diane Morgan was the one bright spark and made me chuckle.
Moneyball, 2011 - ★★★½
Decent. Brad Pitt is a great actor. Jonah Hill was a great support as well. I don't know baseball, but it didn't really spoil my enjoyment.
Don't Look Up, 2021 - ★★★
A bit weird. A bit too long. Meandering and labouring at times, for what was a clever and interesting plot. Even with DiCaprio and Lawrence, it's hard to like the characters. Some really big names but a lot of nearly performances. Funny at times and a great ending, but ultimately didn't impress much.
Click & Collect, 2018 - ★★½
A simple, festive, predictable short watch. Jingle all the way, without the 90s American cheer. Merchant & Chaudhry just about keep it entertaining, but the plot is so overdone I found myself rolling my eyes on more than one occasion.
Angel Has Fallen, 2019 - ★★★
Fun, action thriller. Lots of guns, lots of killing. Nothing too deep, but a decent enough film of its genre. Entertaining.
Army of Thieves, 2021 - ★★½
Very stupid. Seemed to be taking the piss out of itself throughout, but in a cringey, non-funny way. Fun, I suppose, but tired and no real characters to like and get behind.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things, 2020 - ★★
Pointless, psuedo-intellectual claptrap. I'm not going to pretend to have any idea what this film is trying to portray. There were moments where it flirted with being something of substance and intrigue, but soon dissolved back into confusing nothingness. Not often I say it, but a waste of an evening.
The Guilty, 2021 - ★★★★
A fast-paced, well-portrayed tension thriller, with a presumably tiny budget. Telling a story through phone calls alone is hard to pull off, but The Guilty does it well. Tense throughout, and as the gaps are filled, it leaves you gasping.
Worth, 2020 - ★★★½
Poignant and gripping subject matter, but not quite hitting the emotional notes I was expecting. A really interesting story but one that could've told more and really got to the heart of people's accounts.
Eighth Grade, 2018 - ★★★★
Insightfully raw and on point. Brilliantly well acted and an excrutiatingly real in parts. A really enjoyable coming of age drama about being a teenager in the modern wod.
Liar Liar, 1997 - ★★★
Amazingly I haven't seen this film before. A fun film if you're not after anything remotely serious. Carey is Carey. Trope-tastic; a Hollywood plot to the tee. Some fun moments though.
Falling Down, 1993 - ★★★½
There's a lot of hostility in this film. It's not a positive indictment of early 90s western civilisation. But it's a good film, and I really digged the strong 90s LA vibes. Douglas is great, as is Duvall. Doesn't really go anywhere but is a fun film of its time, and manages the strong and violent content well.
Sound of Metal, 2019 - ★★★½
A powerful and thought provoking film. Slow in parts but meaningful and heartfelt throughout. An enjoyable watch.
Coherence, 2013 - ★★★★
A mind bending and clever low budget thriller. Multiple realities, quantam physics and Shrodingers Cat; but dummer down for the average watcher (me). Suspenceful and well-paced. A lot of the dialog was improvised apparently.
Awake, 2021 - ★★★
Not bad. An interesting premise which does become a little farfetched and comical towards the end. Your standard end of the world flick, but some good performances, especially from the young cast, make this an enjoyable watch.
Army of the Dead, 2021 - ★★★½
An enjoyable heist film with a Zombie twist. Not your typical zombies (emotions and pregnancy what), but plenty of your classic headshot killscenes. Clichés, but certainly enough to provide suspense and keep you guessing. A clever ending.
Palm Springs, 2020 - ★★★½
A fun watch. Andy Samberg makes you smile. The classic time loop is a very overdone trope, and add to that a wedding and a cute-but not straight forward-romance and you've got yourself a recipe for a slightly edgy rom-com.
Escape from Pretoria, 2020 - ★★★★
A gripping and enjoyable prison escape thriller set in a time of apartheid South Africa. A true story. Radcliffe was good despite early concerns over a wobbly accent.
Seaspiracy, 2021 - ★★★★
Eye-opening and a real uncomfortable truth people do not want to face. Journalism felt a bit amateurish in parts but overall the interviews were polished and informative.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 1977 - ★★★
One of those films that must have been stunning when released but visually hasn't aged very well. Storytelling felt pretty unengaging, with the visuals being heavily relied upon.
SAS: Red Notice, 2021 - ★★★½
Not bad. An enjoyable action flick. Nice setup and interesting premise. Nothing groundbreaking or mind-bending but a well produced movie.
The X Files, 1998 - ★★★½
A glossier and more detailed X Files episode, with all the usual candidates and a good premise. The end rather let's it down, with a plot bordering on the ludicrous. It's all tied up in a far too neat a knot, ready for season 6 of the TV show.
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, 2021 - ★★★½
Cute teen rom-com. The plot was a little over-trodden, but self-aware, and for the most part well paced. Some good messages and a nice, if twee, ending.
Greenland, 2020 - ★★★½
A half decent apocalypse flick. Ticks all the boxes but doesn't hit any special notes. Would have liked more of the science and less of the drama personally. Touches on but disappointingly misses out on any detail of the immediate aftermath.
