Cape Fear, 1991 - ★★★★

Cape Fear, 1991 - ★★★★

Ah, the 90s. Such a strange decade for film. Not aged brilliantly. I realised halfway through this the Simpsons had paradied this and this ruined any genuine fear this may have instilled. But it was still a good watch. Some brilliant psychotic acting from De Niro and some questionable editing towards the end.

Collateral, 2004 - ★★★★

Collateral, 2004 - ★★★★

A good thriller. Cruise and Foxx are a great double act. The plot is a little predictable and formulaic, but it's still a fun watch if you don't want to think too much.

28 Years Later, 2025 - ★★★★½

28 Years Later, 2025 - ★★★★½

I really enjoyed this. A rare cinema outing helped add to the almost constant dread that goes along with jumpy zombie films. Some great actors in this; the inclusion of Ralph Fiennes in the final 3rd was brilliant casting.

BlackBerry, 2023 - ★★★★

BlackBerry, 2023 - ★★★★

Really entertaining. Love a good tech story. Jim, the "Shark" is a guy you'd hate in real life but is so good in this. You sorta know where it's headed, but it's still a decent story and a fun watch.

Alien: Romulus, 2024 - ★★★★

Alien: Romulus, 2024 - ★★★★

What a ride. A great addition to the franchise. Slow burn, but once the xenomorpths pops its head through the door, it's game time. Really well done. Aliens not their usual lethal selves though. The "final boss" is a good one, and a shocker of a reveal.

The Menu, 2022 - ★★★★

The Menu, 2022 - ★★★★

A shocking thrill ride that makes you question your own mortality. Cut to clip-size pieces and shared online meant this didn't have the shock value it might've, but it didn't take away from the dread. Smart. A big dose of pretention, but not saturatingly. Some great acting and a killer final scene.

Total Recall, 1990 - ★★½

Total Recall, 1990 - ★★½

Might have seen this before, but I didn't remember much of it. Just ludicrous. In every way possible. Extremely of it's time. Unapologetically 80s (yet released in 1990). Very questionable acting and fight scenes. It's fun. But it's so stupid.

Brick, 2025 - ★★★½

Brick, 2025 - ★★★½

Half decent mystery sci-fi thriller. Interesting premise, and a better reveal than I was expecting. But light on detail. "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone" (Blaise Pascal) - a timely quote that summarises the plot pretty well. Nothing overly memorable but an entertaining enough story to stay engaged.

Full Metal Jacket, 1987 - ★★★½

Full Metal Jacket, 1987 - ★★★½

Not sure how I felt about this. It feels like there was an important message in there that I didn't get. An indictment of war, if it was needed, and - well - Americans. Sadistic in its humour and callousness of battle. It's very well done. A lot of fire.

STRAW, 2025 - ★★★★

STRAW, 2025 - ★★★★

This one hit right in the feels. An emotional rollercoaster with a brilliant setup. Heartfelt and guttural performances from the lead actor. A damning indictment of the class and racial divides in the US. A strange twist ending that didn't feel right for the film or the character building. Still a very good watch.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, 2023 - ★★★★

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, 2023 - ★★★★

Just a great action movie. Had to watch in 2 parts though. And I'm still only halfway through the story. Hunt is like a less-suave, but smarter, more able James Bond, without the casual mysigony. A bit of cheese, and full of its cringeworthy tropes, but the stunts and action scenes are all-out and unyielding. Intrigued for the next installment. ETTTHHHAAANNN.

Exterritorial, 2025 - ★★★★

Exterritorial, 2025 - ★★★★

Enjoyable thriller with a strong female lead. Your classic missing person / crazy person storyline, but it's well executed and didn't feel tedious at any point. Some decent action a good conclusion. Watch it in German.

I Know What You Did Last Summer, 1997 - ★★★

I Know What You Did Last Summer, 1997 - ★★★

Trashy slasher 90s horror. Not really at all scary though. A watchable, entertaining classic of the genre; but it's a pretty pedestrian plot without too many shocks or reveals.

Retreat, 2011 - ★★★½

Retreat, 2011 - ★★★½

Not a bad 90 minute thriller. Had the feeling throughout you knew what was coming, but it did some clever flip-flopping at the end. Not a lot of action, but some smart suspense. Pretty standard useless couple in danger with a possible madman who claims to be helping them plot.

The Platform 2, 2024 - ★★★½

The Platform 2, 2024 - ★★★½

Very much like the first film. Not really a continuation. Some great characters, and a similar raw, violent plot and imagery. As with the first, it went a bit bewildering at the end and didn't reach a very succinct conclusion. But an entertaining and thrilling watch.

The Gorge, 2025 - ★★★★½

The Gorge, 2025 - ★★★★½

Really enjoyed this. A great action film. Suspense, an interesting reveal and some real chemistry between the leads. Tied up a bit too neatly in the end after some brilliant plot building. A bit silly and Pirates of the Caribbean esque, but also eery and mysterious in parts.

Civil War, 2024 - ★★★★

Civil War, 2024 - ★★★★

Harrowing and feels scarily close to a future reality. Slow and a little hard to grasp what's going on at times. But when it ramps up, you feel it. Gut-wrenching and heartless in the way the violence of the situation is depicted. But very well portrayed from a documenter's perspective. I had questions that weren't answered, but it was still a thrilling watch.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, 2024 - ★★★★

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, 2024 - ★★★★

Didn't get round to watching this over Christmas so popped it on today for the kids' second viewing. Really enjoyed it. The jokes always land well, and the production quality as always is mesmerising. All the same tried and tested characters, with the introduction of the two police officers who were both great.

Challengers, 2024 - ★★★★

Challengers, 2024 - ★★★★

A twisted and toxic love triangle, with tennis. We'll put together, but a bit long with excessive slow mos. Not many redeeming qualities between any of the 3 main characters, and very little in way of supporting actors either. Entertaining, but it helps if you like tennis. Final scene was the movie in a nutshell.

Don't Worry Darling, 2022 - ★★★½

Don't Worry Darling, 2022 - ★★★½

An intriguing film that didn't really feel so until the final quarter. Took a long time to get going. A few tired tropes of the genre, and some heavy Get Out vibes. Florence Pugh keeps it watchable, and the reveal is well done. Didn't see it coming. I have so many questions about the premise of the film.
